Executive Director, Ignatian Center for Jesuit Education

IGNATIAN CENTER FOR JESUIT EDUCATION

Santa Clara University is seeking an extraordinary leader to serve as Executive Director of the University’s Ignatian Center for Jesuit Education and as the Mission and Identity Officer of the University.   The Executive Director reports directly to the President of Santa Clara University.

We are seeking a visionary and creative leader who can command respect in the academic environment and advance the University’s mission to academic excellence, social justice, and educating the whole person.  The ideal candidate will have an earned PhD and a significant academic record that justifies appointment as a tenured professor.

As mission and identity officer of Santa Clara University, the ideal candidate will work, both through the Ignatian Center for Jesuit Education, and through other structures at the University, to bring to the university leadership and community an awareness, understanding, and shared appreciation of Jesuit Catholic thinking.  The individual must have extensive experience with the Jesuit Catholic tradition and be capable of articulating and advocating for its relevance to the modern University in a religiously plural environment and of creating programs which make that a reality.

As Executive Director of the Ignatian Center for Jesuit Education, the ideal candidate will have significant administrative experience, or possess skills that will enable him or her to learn quickly and operate effectively as an administrative leader.  The position requires a person who has high standards, is goal-oriented and collaborative, and can lead a high-performing staff of 15 professionals.  Administrative responsibilities include strategic planning, hiring and retaining staff, spurring a broad range of university programs, budgeting and financial administration, fund raising, and the development of joint programs with schools and colleges within Santa Clara and in the Silicon Valley community.

Opportunities and Expectations for Leadership:

Santa Clara University, a comprehensive Jesuit, Catholic university located in California’s Silicon Valley, is entering an ambitious period of growth and expansion across multiple fronts and has developed a bold new vision and integrated strategic plan, “Santa Clara 2020” (http://www.scu.edu/santaclara2020/).   The University is launching new interdisciplinary initiatives, promoting technology-enhanced teaching methods and building facilities that respond to the changing landscape of higher education, our increasingly technological society, and an innovative approach to liberal arts education.

As a religiously-affiliated university, SCU is committed to retaining and reimagining its Jesuit and Catholic character.  This identity will be enacted in academic and in co-curricular programs, in active community engagement and alumni affairs, and through creative cooperation between the Society of Jesus and the faculty and staff who make up the vast majority of the Santa Clara University community.

The Ignatian Center for Jesuit Education has a strong record of accomplishment, as described in its latest annual report at http://www.scu.edu/ic/annualreport.   A visionary Center strategic plan for 2015-2020 lays out an ambitious and evolving role for the Center at http://www.scu.edu/ic/about/strategic-plan.cfm.   The new executive director will be expected to follow through on that strategic plan, while revising it to fit new conditions and opportunities.

The Center is supported by a significant endowment and an annual allocation in the University’s budget.  Fund raising provides roughly 15% of the Center’s support and the executive director is expected to lead the fund raising effort with the assistance of the Director of External Relations and a major gifts officer assigned to the Center.
