The Films of Graham Greene
'This Gun for Hire'
Based on the story, "A Gun for Sale," "This Gun for Hire" featured Alan Ladd and Veronica Lake in the leading roles. Though Greene dubbed "Gun" "an entertainment," it contains the seeds of a psychological complexity that he would mine further in later works.
'The Fallen Idol'
"Idol" marked Greene's first collaboration with the director Carol Reed, and demonstrates the author's ability to evoke suspense in even mundane circumstances, in this case the relationship between a butler and a boy in his care.
'The Third Man'
Greene did not write a traditional screenplay for the classic 1949 film "The Third Man," but a novella adapted by director Carol Reed.
'Our Man in Havana'
Starring Alec Guinness and the inimitable Noel Coward, "Our Man in Havana" (1959) plays spy craft for laughs, as Greene chronicles the missteps of a vacuum cleaner salesman turned informant for British secret service.
'The End of the Affair'
Maurice Bendrix in "Affair" is closely modeled on Greene himself, who wrote screenplays and film criticism as well as novels.
