Now it’s John McCain’s turn. How will Senator Obama’s pick of fellow Senator Joe Biden affect McCain’s choice of a running mate? Here’s one thought: This is a change election. Obama seemed to understand that from day one, positioning himself as the change agent who can satisfy voters’ hunger for something different. Yet his V.P. is a solid, conventional choice: Joe Biden has been in the U.S. Senate since he was 30 and has been running for president for twenty years. He is hardly a revolutionary pick. McCain now has an opportunity to claim the mantle of change for himself by making a game-changing choice. That means McCain may pick a woman, a minority or another maverick to make the case that he is the true agent of change voters want.
