In the September 15 issue of America Paul Cottle reports from Florida on the acrimonious debate over whether to teach evolution in public schools. Catholics, Cottle notes, are suprisingly wary of the teaching of evolution, even though the Vatican has made it clear that evolutionary biology is compatible with Catholic teaching about creation. In 2005, David M. Byers made a similar point, writing that "even though the official church sees little danger in evolution, our educational leadership has been very slow to correct the anti-evolution biases that Catholics pick up from prominent elements in contemporary culture."
