The 2,500-page document was issued as the Catholic Church in France, like in other countries, seeks to face up to shameful secrets that were long covered up.

Hundreds of priests and bishops filled the Rouen cathedral along with many hundreds more people, including Muslims who have joined in the grieving since the murder of the 85-year-old priest.

"Be we Christians, Muslims, anything, we have to be together," one resident said.
