If that's not something to celebrate, I'm not sure what is worth celebrating these days.  I raise a cheer, not for the death of a man who is evil beyond measure, but for the bravery of the men and women who risked their lives to accomplish the mission, and of the triumph of right over evil (as much as we can achieve, at least, this side of Eden).

As for why millions turned out in tearful joy for V-E day, I disagree with Vince K., who claims it was over the end of some abstract -ism.   Three reasons were overwhelming: 1. The shooting is stopped.  2. They are coming home.  3. The leader of the enemy is dead and gone.   Let us look forward to the day when all three reasons apply again, taking encouragement from the statement of the Vatican.  

I do want to correct something Jack wrote about "some abstract -ism": the existence of fascism and militarism in the lives of Americans & people around the world was real, not a rarified notion.  We fought a "total war" and the toll was high.  I agree that there was nothing "abstract" about V-E Day.

FDR's "Four Freedoms" (1941) and his "Second Bill of Rights" (1944) wwere lofty principles that came out of the war.  We don't have anything like that to show for the last ten years.

The Vatican statement is the appropriate reaction.

The scenes of cheering crowds in NYC and outside the White House last night diminished us as a nation and those people of faith in attendance. Compare it to V-E Day where people turned out to mark the end of a long war and the defeat of facism and militarism, not to celebrate the death of one man (whose influence, in any case, has decreased significantly over the years).

Or, better yet, compare it to the crowds turned out across the Middle East this year to reject oligarchy.

I agree with Vince that the statement is the best statement that we as a Church can issue, especially since yesterday we celebrated Divine Mercy Sunday and the beatification of Pope John Paul the great.  I actually prayed for his soul at Mass today, and I hope that people will pray for mine one day as well.  On a personal note, when I saw the crowds rejoicing it was a sign for me that we, as a nation, desperately need to hear and embrace the Good News.

I agree with a lot of what you say.   My recollections of VE ( and VJ) day are the families, friends, neighbors, and strangers out thinking and yelling about the fathers, sons, brothers, uncles, etc. who might finally be able to come home, except for some who didn't make it, having accomplished what you speak of.   The death of one man, who led the enemy, was cause for unbounded joy, I believe, given what he had instigated that millions suffered through.
