James Martin, S.J.December 22, 2008

Greg Shemitz, a photojournalist, just sent us this link to his photos, available online on his website, of Cardinal Dulles’ funeral.  Mr. Shemitz was on assignment for Catholic News Service.  Among them are this one, of Jesuit priests processing past the casket of Cardinal Dulles.  The final one on Mr. Shemitz’s website, of the great crowd on Fifth Avenue, is especially moving.

Thanks for posting the link to the photo gallery, Father James. It was an honor and privilege as a Catholic photojournalist to document Cardinal Dulles' funeral Mass and the special Mass for the cardinal at Fordham University on Dec. 16. I want to add that I shot the photos while on assignment for the Catholic News Service, which has an article on the funeral posted on its Web site, catholicnews.com. Have a blessed Christmas! I just learned today of the death of Cardinal Avery Dulles and need to write that I will always be grateful for his contribution, "Models of the Church." As pastoral associate of a suburban Cleveland parish, I fondly recall his addition of the Discipleship Model, in a revision of his original work. This model is the one with which the People of God continue to resonate in our parish. It is a wonderful reminder of the call to which we all attempt to respond day after day. Thank you, Cardinal Dulles!
