Check it out: a new resource specifically designed for Catholic women, just launched by St. Anthony Messenger Press, which combines books, reading guides, CDs, online author interviews and even e-greetings.  They’ve done a fine job of creating a good resource for individuals, small groups and faith formation programs in parishes.  SMP has gathered all this under the title of "Called to Holiness."  America readers will recognize among the series’ distinguished authors Sydney Callahan and Dolores Leckey.  (Photo at right from one of their e-greetings.)

Here’s how their website describes it: "The focus of the Called to Holiness series is spirituality. Its interest is women of all backgrounds: rich and poor; married and single; white, black and brown; gay and straight; those who are biological mothers and those who are mothers in other senses. There will be volumes on grassroots theology, family life, prayer, action for justice, grieving, young adult life, the wisdom years and Hispanic heritage. I hope all the volumes in this series will deepen and shape your own spiritual life in creative ways, as you engage with the theology of our rich, two-thousand-year-old Christian tradition."

Thanks for letting us know this. I have posted the site on a couple of groups that I belong to. I have many women friends. They come in all sizes, colors, orientations. etc. I learned a long time ago to pay attention to what women, including young women, have to teach me. My younger sister Theresa was my spiritual director or mentor or whatever for about 5 years. This arrangement happened by accident. Years ago I discovered that she was able to help me when I got stuck. She had a way of making things clear for me. One of my biggest problems is my self-absorption. This self-absorption really narrows my vision and my options. Theresa helped me a great deal with this. She is a loving woman and knew how to not get in the way of the Spirit. More than anything else, she emphasizes honesty and surrender or acceptance. Her focus is to learn how to trust God. I was very lucky because Theresa was willing to put up with me. I am lucky that I have many women in my life who are willing to put up with me.

My Catholic identity and my wife’s Protestant identity continue to endure, and our faith has developed together in greater harmony, knowing that our love for each other was ultimately grounded in our love for God.
