Born in the Bronx, N.Y., Prof. John P. Meier received his B.A. in philosophy from St. Joseph Seminary, Yonkers, N.Y., his License in Theology from the Gregorian University in Rome, and his Doctorate in Sacred Scripture from the Biblical Institute in Rome.
He has served as professor biblical studies at St. Joseph Seminary, Dunwoodie; at the Catholic University of America, Washington, D.C.; and from 1998 as the William K. Warren Jr. Professor in Theology at the University of Notre Dame, Indiana. He has been both associate and general editor of the Catholic Biblical Quarterly, an associate editor of New Testament Studies, and the president of the Catholic Biblical Association.
Prof. Meier is the author of ten volumes. His major work (so far in four volumes), A Marginal Jew: Rethinking the Historical Jesus, has been translated into French, Italian, Spanish, and Portuguese. A fifth volume in the series, Probing the Authenticity of the Parables, is due to be published by Yale University Press in late fall of 2015. He was appointed a Prelate of Honor (Monsignor) by Pope John Paul II in 1995, and was one of the major speakers at a symposium in honor of Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI, held at the Vatican in 2013.
