A Reflection for Saturday of the Fifth Week of Easter

You can find today’s readings here.

Remember the word I spoke to you,
'No slave is greater than his master.' (Jn 15:20)

The line in today’s readings that really struck me was “no slave is greater than his master” because it emphasizes that nobody is better or bigger than others. God is the best. All people are equal and should be treated the same. I have seen this firsthand during my four years at Cristo Rey and through my participation in the corporate work study program. I have worked in a school and now in America’s office and even though I work with older people, they treat me as if I am not an inexperienced high school student but a worker with talents, skills and potential just like them.

I am given important assignments, included in team meetings and decisions, and have never felt like an inferior member of the team. My voice and hard work has always been valued. As I head off to LeMoyne College in the fall, I hope that I will always remember to treat people with dignity and respect, and know that we are all equal in God’s eyes.

Regardless of where my college and career path goes, I will always appreciate the way that I was treated.

I will be the first in my family to go to college. I know that this won’t be the same as some of my LeMoyne peers. However, I know that, despite our backgrounds, we are all similar and have been given many graces from God. With hard work, studying lots, guidance from my professors and faith in God, I can succeed. God loves each of us the same and I know that I will need to lean on God even more because I will be far from home and having totally new experiences.

The next time you catch yourself treating someone unjustly, I encourage you to take a moment and realize we are all created in the likeness of God. Regardless of where my college and career path goes, I will always appreciate the way that I was treated, and I hope to always treat others with the dignity and respect that they deserve as God’s children.
