Catholic leaders in Cameroon have urged prayers for one of the African country's bishops, whose remains were pulled from a river on June 2, three days after his apparent suicide.

Archbishop Peter Smith of Southwark offered prayers for the victims and survivors of the June 3 attack that claimed 7 lives and injured 48 people.

"The Catholic Church remains committed to ensuring the fundamental right to medical care, a right which is in keeping with the God-given dignity of every person, and the corresponding obligation as a country to provide for this right."

The U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops "is on record supporting prudent action to mitigate the worst impacts of climate change."

The bishops' spring assembly will include discussions ranging from immigration to religious freedom, as well as the Synod of Bishops on youth.
