Angela Alaimo O'Donnell, a former Loyola professor, is spearheading an effort for the university to reconsider its decision.

"Catholic schools are facing a crisis at this very moment," the three bishops said. "Over 130 schools have already announced permanent closure. These closures are disproportionately harmful to low-income and Black children."

Amid the national tumult over racial injustice, there are high-level calls for the schools to teach more about the church’s past links to slavery and segregation, and how Black Catholics persevered nonetheless.

72 percent of students and 87 percent of teachers in Catholic schools are white. They need to be reading and teaching more Black literature.

Black Catholics believe that the time is now for the church to have a long-overdue reassessment over its role with racism and racial injustice.
