The mission of the Vatican hospital is "today more aimed at profit than on caring for children," according to a report from the AP.

Ten-month-old Charlie Gard was born in England with mitochondrial DNA depletion syndrome, which causes progressive muscle weakness, brain damage and respiratory or liver failure; it is typically fatal.

The nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office said the measure would leave 22 million more people without insurance.

Senate proposal could “wreak havoc on low-income families and struggling communities, and must not be supported,” the bishops said in a statement released on Thursday evening.  

“The Affordable Care Act for all of its flaws was a movement in favor of comprehensive health care,” Bishop Robert McElroy said.
