Millions of Americans behind on rent got some good news this week. On Aug. 3, the Center for Disease Control extended a national eviction moratorium through Oct. 3.

While Catholic organizations have stepped up their efforts to help those experiencing homelessness during this summer’s heat wave, they are also preparing for what might be an even greater crisis.

Catholic Charities USA and the Felician Sisters of North America have each contributed $1 million to a new fund to benefit people “in extreme danger of losing their homes this month.”

Six decades after its founding, Camillus House has grown from a small overnight shelter into a full-service center, spread across a series of new buildings and offering a comprehensive system of care for the poor and homeless.

The number of homeless has continued to grow. The 2018-19 season averaged about 85 homeless a night. The past season averaged 90-95 each night.

Msgr. Kevin Sullivan, the executive director of Catholic Charities of New York, said that the needs of the homeless—for shelter, food and mental health assistance—have not changed during this time of crisis.
