Pope Francis has invoked the civil rights crusader in three high-profile messages delivered during his pontificate.

The cardinal already serves as president of the Pontifical Commission for the Protection of Minors.

The pope wrote a letter to young people, saying the church wants "to listen to your voice, your sensitivities and your faith, even your doubts and your criticism."

Archbishop José Gomez of Los Angeles called the video “a beautiful message...and I think that is what we need right now, more hope for the future."

The group said it "is completely legitimate and authorized" to investigate the matter and inform the pope.
