“I ask forgiveness,” the pope said on his flight from Lima to Rome. “It’s a hurt [caused] without wishing it.”

Jesus “is here in Lima, or wherever you are living, in the routine of your daily life and work.”

People and cheered Pope Francis everywhere he went on this last day of his visit.

“Just as the apostles faced the storm on the sea, you had to face the brunt of ‘El Niño costero.’”

“The degradation of the environment...cannot be separated from the moral degradation of our communities.”

Francis is the first pope to come to the Amazon region, and he insisted that his first event and major speech of his visit to Peru should be to this place.

Father Ernesto Cavassa was provincial of the Jesuits in Peru from 1998 to 2004, and president of the Conference of Latin American Jesuit Provincials from 2005 to 2012.

“There is no Christian joy when doors are closed; there is no Christian joy when others are made to feel unwanted,” the pope said.

Many in Chile opposed Francis’ appointment of Msgr. Barros as bishop because he is known to have belonged to the inner circle of a priest accused of abuse.

The couple said, “I do” Thursday morning after telling Francis that they had been married in a civil service in 2010.
