More than 230 professors of Catholic theology have signed a statement protesting the Vatican’s recent pronouncement that priests cannot bless same-sex unions, adding to dissent over the document.

The Buffalo diocese sought bankruptcy protection in February, citing hundreds of lawsuits filed against it since August 2019 over its handling of sexual abuse allegations.

Local health authorities put the the entire monastery under quarantine late last week after the first cases of coronavirus were discovered there.

The Vatican has imposed sanctions on a prominent Polish cardinal, retired Archbishop Henryk Gulbinowicz, after he was accused of sexually abusing a seminarian and of covering up abuse in another case.

The University of Notre Dame's president, the Rev. John Jenkins, announced Friday he tested positive for the coronavirus less than a week after he attended a White House event without wearing a mask.

Bishop Thomas Tobin sparked a backlash when he tweeted, “A reminder that Catholics should not support or attend LGBTQ 'Pride Month' events held in June.”

“Today’s repeal is a major step toward building a culture that unconditionally protects the dignity of life, and is yet more evidence that the death penalty is falling out of favor with the American public,” said Krisanne Vaillancourt Murphy, executive director of Catholic Mobilizing Network, in a statement released to the media.

Sister Wendy Beckett, an art historian and critic who rose to prominence on TV late in life, has died. She was 88.
