Federal officials are releasing thousands of asylum seekers in Texas. A Catholic Charities facility is taking up the challenge of providing temporary food and shelter after grueling journeys.

President Donald Trump announced new priorities for immigration reform from the White House Rose Garden on Thursday, underscoring the need for border security, limiting asylum cases and merit-based immigration over family-based immigration.

“For Jesus, it wasn’t about taking the right stand on issues. It was about standing in the right place.”

U.S. Customs and Border Protection is facing an “unprecedented humanitarian and border security crisis,” according to officials.

“We are all humans and we deserve a chance to thrive. We’re not asking for things to be given to us. We’re asking for an opportunity to work hard."

U.S. and Mexican bishops urged “the administration to reverse this policy, which needlessly increases the suffering of the most vulnerable and violates international protocols.”

“The historical and practical importance of this ruling cannot be overstated,” according to the deputy director of the A.C.L.U.’s Immigrants’ Rights Project.

Catholic Community Services of Southern Arizona moved the Casa Alitas shelter for asylum seekers to the monastery in January. Their previous location in Tucson was not big enough to accommodate the influx of asylum seekers.

A compromise to protect Dreamers and T.P.S. recipients “must not be achieved at the expense of other immigrant children and families,” said Bishop Mario Eduardo Dorsonville-Rodríguez in testimony before the U.S. House Judiciary Committee.
