Congratulations to Francis X. Clooney, a frequent contributor to "In All Things," who has just been appointed as the director of Harvard Divinity School's Center for the Study of World Religions.  Fr. Clooney joined the HDS faculty in 2005, as the Parkman Professor of Divinity and Professor of Comparative Theology, after teaching at Boston College since 1984. He served as acting director of the CSWR during the 2008 spring term.  "Francis Clooney is arguably the world's leading scholar of comparative theology," said Dean William A. Graham in announcing the appointment.  We're also happy to have him as a frequent blogger, too.  Read the whole story here.

Not that I know much about the field of comparative theology, but having read many of Father Clooney's deeply insightful reflections on this blog, it seems like they couldn't have picked a smarter man for the job. And not that I know Father Clooney personally, but judging from the personal kindness which is plainly evident in the tone of all his posts, it also sounds like they couldn't have picked a nicer guy. Congratulations, Father Clooney!

Many know Fr. Clooney from his years of academic work at Boston College and HDS. Others know him from his writing and scholarly contributions to the world of theological studies. The many faith communities extra Roman Catholicism know him as a sensitive and compassionate journeyman in the search for truth.

The parishioners at Our Lady of Sorrows in Sharon, MA are privileged to be witness to his dedication and consummate attention to God's presence among all.

At one time, the presence of Catholics on both major-party tickets would have been cause for celebration. But now Mr. Vance and Mr. Biden reflect the political divisions among U.S. Catholics.
