James Martin, S.J.April 01, 2008
When I was a boy, I laughed when my parents would talk about their all-time favorite April Fool’s joke, the famous BBC "spaghetti harvest" TV spot, which fooled millions of viewers, a la "The War of the Worlds." Even their fading memories of the spot made them laugh. Well, here it is, from 1957, courtesy of Youtube. My favorite line is "the vast spaghetti plantations in the Po valley." Bon apetito! Dear Father James Martin, As a lenten experience, our Parish, Our Lady of Angels in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn, spent 6 weeks talking about your book, "My Life with the Saints". From the remarks I read regarding your book, I know you heard this before, but "Tuesday's with the Saints" as we called it was a great experience for all of us. Your wit and charm brought the saints to our level, made them reachable, understandable and available. Your insights and comments made for great discussions both on Tuesday afternoons and evenings. For me, it was the best lenten preparation I have had in years and I now miss our sessions. I look forward to your coming to our Parish on Monday, April 7. From a grateful heart, I thank you for giving so freely of yourself to all of us. Be assured of my prayers. Sincerely, Pam Hume #718-748-1384

The Israeli military began perhaps its most aggressive ground offensive so far in the war to root out what is left of Hamas, maintaining an almost daily pace of incursions and airstrikes. The results have been devastating.

Cory Booker and the Hands Off protesters prove that words still have power. But only if we accompany them with action.
