One of the great human rights advocates of the past few decades, Alison Des Forges, who worked tirelessly on behalf of the people of Rwanda, and was certainly the world’s leading expert on the genocide there in 1994, has died in the plane crash outside of Buffalo yesterday evening.  If you read this moving tribute to her on the Human Rights Watch website, you will come to understand why she was so admired in the human rights community.  Here is the story of a woman for others.  RIP.

Thank you for posting this, shocking though it was to get the news. Alison Des Forges was an extraordinary woman, from whose example we can all learn.

It may interest some of your readers to know that there will a memorial for Alison Des Forges at St. Joseph's, at 3.00 PM on Sunday, February 22. The church (which I gather serves the SUNY Buffalo Catholic community) is at 3269 Main Street, 5 minutes walk from the University's south campus. http://www.stjosephbuffalo.com/
