The U.S. Catholic bishops’ latest annual report on child and youth protection shows abuse allegations are down, while safe environment protocols have taken root in the church—but guarding against complacency about abuse prevention is critical, as is providing ongoing support for survivors.

Growth, undeniable tensions and “a deep desire to rebuild and strengthen” the body of Christ have emerged as key themes in the latest synod report for the Catholic Church in the U.S.

In an interview with Norah O'Donnell April 24 on “60 Minutes,” Pope Francis clarified that “Fiducia Supplicans” didn’t allow blessings of “the union” but of “each person.”

Vincentian Father Joseph S. Williams, pastor of St. Vincent de Paul Parish in Chicago, said in a May 8 statement that he was “deeply sorry for any confusion and/or anger that this has caused, particularly for the People of God.”

”The division and hatred that have been part of these protests and demonstrations do not come from the true God,” Father Roger L. Landry said.

The Archdiocese of New Orleans had been ordered by a New Orleans criminal court to turn over records relating to a long-running criminal investigation involving multiple accused priests.

The Vatican’s new declaration, “Dignitas Infinita” (”Infinite Dignity”), garners praise from U.S. Catholic leaders for its comprehensive addressing of key issues surrounding human dignity, including poverty, migration, abuse, gender issues, and digital violence.

“Sober St. Patrick’s Day” is set to mark its 13th year of celebrating Irish arts, culture and food—minus the alcohol—following New York’s annual parade for the beloved patron saint of the Irish.

Father Robert Hoeffner, who was slain alongside his sister Sally Hoeffner on Jan. 28th, had recently celebrated his 50th jubilee as a priest in April 2023.

"It brought a lot back from my own abuse, because some of the things I read were similar to what my rapist would say -- sort of combining abuse with things of a spiritual nature," clerical abuse survivor Faith Hakesley said in an interview.
